Ten-year-old Kid Hikes Sierra High Route // Explore.visitmammoth.com

Sometimes, as John Muir pointed out, the mountains are calling and you must go, no matter what your age and how far the distance. Going deep into the mountains is exactly what 10-year-old Sage Miller did this summer. Sage and his father, Brant (or Trek-or-Treat and Leadfoot if you want to use their trail names), completed the Sierra High Route Trail, also known as Roper’s Route. “With the premature snow melt I knew we wouldn’t need crampons this year,” Brant said of their route choice. “And it seemed like it might be too hot on the John Muir...

5 Reasons Flyboarding is Like Snowboarding // GrindTV.com

Imagine your feet are strapped into a board and you are gliding. Now, imagine that instead of fresh pow beneath you, there is only air … and water a dozen or so feet below that. I recently tried flyboarding, the action sport developed in 2011 by Franky Zapata of Zapata Racing, for the first time and to me, it felt a lot like snowboarding. Hut to hut on the Durango-Moab MTB epic // GrindTV.com

“The last group that did this got some rain on the last day,” said Glen Miyata, a bike mechanic from Mammoth Lakes, California’s Footloose Sports during a pre-trip bike check, “but I think you guys are going to be fine.” Fast-forward to night two of San Juan Huts’ Durango to Moab, a mountain bike hut-to-hut trip. The 16 x 16-foot wooden shelter shook with thunder, rain hammered the roof and lightning sizzled in the sky as the group of self-proclaimed “Hutties” lay in their bunks in the middle of nowhere. No one spoke, but no one slept,...

Weekend Warriors: Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail // MountainHikingSite.com

Many people would love to hike the entire 2,650 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, but many people also have full time jobs with 2-3 weeks of vacation per year so a six-month trek in the wilderness isn’t realistic. Instead, why not rack up some miles completing sections of the trail on the weekends? A good place to head for weekend warrior hiking is Big Bear, California where you can take day trips on the famed trail and still wind up in a comfortable bed at the end of the day. Section C of the PCT starts in Palm Springs and goes through Big...

5 Pro-Picked Hikes in Mammoth Lakes // MountainGetaway.com

The town of Mammoth Lakes sits high in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range of California, just south of the Eastern Gateway to Yosemite National Park. At its center is Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, stomping ground for many professional skiers and snowboarders. However, when the snow melts from Mammoth Mountain and summer is in full swing, a vast array of hiking trails open up in and around Mammoth Lakes. Surrounded by 3 million acres of forest and national park land, and situated at just under 8,000 feet, Mammoth Lakes is the trail...

Striking Gold With the Inaugural Ezakimak // Snowshoe Magazine

“So this is what we do for fun in the mountains,” said the runner hopping up and down next to me, trying to stay warm. “Race UP the mountain.” I laughed but it was true. Dubbed, “Ezakimak 11,053’ Pink Moon Challenge,” participants were heading more than three miles up the backside of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in a brand new event. Pronounced ‘e-zack-a-mack,’ the word is Kamikaze spelled backwards, and the new race is a twist on the ski resort’s famous mountain bike trail of that name. Kamikaze weaves down from the top of the resort along the...

Snowshoeing Under the Light of the Silvery Moon // Snowshoe Magazine

An arctic blast had been freezing the Eastern Sierra the week I was to enjoy my first full moon snowshoe tour at Tamarack Lodge in Mammoth Lakes, Calif. On the Wednesday prior to my Saturday tour, temperatures hovered around 2F in town and with the wind chill factored in, well below zero at the top of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. While the area is used to receiving an average of 400 inches of snow each winter, this type of bitter cold was unusual. I figured I would have to double up on layers for the nighttime tour, especially if the sky was as...

The Growth of a Ski Town // Sierra Heritage Magazine

A rich mining and tourism history paired with the grit of a skier named Dave McCoy first gave people a reason to visit Mammoth Lakes years ago. Yet if you only know Mammoth Lakes as a destination for the hardiest of skiers, it’s time you take another look. In 2014 the town commemorated the 30th anniversary of its incorporation from Mono County. Over the years it has developed into the base camp for many types of outdoor adventures and family traditions. With new businesses and amenities as well as old favorites still on tap, there was...

Film Hero Louis Zamperini’s Mammoth Connection // SKI Magazine

Louis Zamperini, the subject of the upcoming film “Unbroken,” wasn’t just a weekend warrior skier. He came to Mammoth Mountain with a bigger purpose: to help underprivileged boys stay out of trouble. Zamperini established the Victory Boys Camp around 1953, according to an oral history document by the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles, and skiing was one of the many activities he introduced to those boys.
