Language is constantly evolving. Meanings of words and phrases morph over time, often to a great degree. Just think of how the word “gay” has evolved over the past 50-60 years.
So when applying a document written in 1923 for an institution founded in 1917 to the management of that institution today, what context do you use?
What did the words in the document mean in 1923? How might they be interpreted today?
That is the problem currently facing Deep Springs College — that tiny university located among the cattle and the alfalfa fields after you turn out of Big Pine and head over Westgard Pass when trekking from the Eastern Sierra to Las Vegas.
